Bolton Blue

Posted in Uncategorized by Dice on February 6, 2011

Our buddy Pat Grant has been working on a graphic novel for nearly a year now and has put some pages online for us to marvel at. From his email that he sent around:

After working for about eleven months on my graphic novel. I have finally got something online for people to look at. http://www.boltonblue.com It’s not finished, of course, but I have about 80 pages of penciled comics that I’ll be inking, colouring and posting onto the webpage at a rate of about three a week. I don’t really expect anyone to read through a whole graphic novel on the internet but the plan is to drum up a bit of interest online then release it as a book later this year. So if you’re interested in reading long stories online you can see the thing unfold as I draw it. If you’re like me and you couldn’t bear the though of reading a long comic on a computer then I suppose you can get a feel for things and wait for the book. It reads pretty well on an ipad for those well heeled and inclined toward early adoption.”

Hellen Jo

Posted in Uncategorized by Dice on October 12, 2010

Last year some time Hellen Jo was offering to do commission pieces. The offer didn’t last long so I was super lucky to grab a piece. I told her that I liked “Japan, ghosts, monsters, not-creepy school girls, and Cool Runnings”. Check out below to see what I got. Anyway, I mention this because she has posted the entire first issue of her comic Jin & Jam online for all of us to read. It’s really great and totally worth the $5 to own it in print.

Mini Comic Of The Month Club – May

Posted in Uncategorized by Dice on August 17, 2010

The Mini Comic Of The Month Club is a ‘club’ that was started by a few Oz comic artists at the end of 2009. Each month an artist does a comic and it’s sent out to all the club members. That’s 12 artists, 12 comics, 12 months. Only 50 copies of each are produced and then each recipient sells their copy on eBay for a lot of money.

For May’s installment of The Mini Comic of The Month Club we received Ben Hutchings’ You Smell & Eye Don’t. It contains two pieces – the first is a conversation between Formula 1 driver Nigel Mansell and a boy on a street corner. The other is about packing mugs in the kitchen. Hope you like the shots below.

Newcastle, Australia

Posted in Uncategorized by Dice on June 16, 2010

I’m really sorry for the quality of these photos – a friend of mine has gone to Europe and my camera went with her. Anyway, here are some shots from Issue #3 of Newcastle, Australia. It’s an amazing zine, full of illustrations of Newcastle, its buildings and its abandoned objects. Trevor Dickinson’s line work is impeccable! Newcastle has some great old buildings and the shipping yards on the way to Stockton would be great material. Grab a copy here: www.trevordickinson.com/newcastleprods/home.html.

Please be sure to visit the drawings on his site because these shots do not do them any justice.

Harvey The 29th

Posted in Uncategorized by roburt on June 10, 2010

As anyone who knows me knows, I do everything in slow motion. So with that excuse, here’s my delayed reaction to last month’s MCA Zine Fair – it was fuckin’ great! I saw tons of sweet zines and a whole bunch of nice people that I didn’t talk to because I’m shy. Best of all, the best zine I scored on the day was actually placed right into my lazy hands. It’s called Harvey The 29th and is created by some talented dude who goes by the name, Tinman Johnson (who sounds like an old bluesman, yet has the immaculate penmanship of a teenage girl).

The zine has the style of classic George Herriman comics (Krazy Kat and Ignatz) or those wacky Merry Melodies cartoons from the ’30s (you can kinda hear Cab Calloway bellowing some reefer swing tune in the back of your head while you read it). It’s funny and weird and shot through with some nutty absurdity (eg: a great panel of Harvey playing ten-pin bowling with a skull and bones, and another of a bunch of skeletons playing poker at the bottom of a 10-foot grave). Highly recommended!

Beef Knuckles #4 is out!

Posted in Uncategorized by Dice on May 24, 2010

Hi! We’ve just finished up at the MCA Zine Fair and had a great time. Met up with lots of people and grabbed / swapped / bought a whole bunch of zines from great zine makers. We also launched Issue #4 of Beef Knuckles. As always, we handscreen printed each cover but this time we did two different colour schemes – a fluoro pink and a light blue. There’s only 100 of each colour. If you have a lazy $4 lying around why don’t you buy a copy? Drop us a line at:
hon.boey @ gmail.com
brynmail @ gmail.com
robmoran12345 @ yahoo.com
and I’ll send one out! And don’t forget to tell us which colour cover you want.

Here is the list of contributors for this issue: Sam Hoh, Sam Thomas, MC Grammar (“it’s grammar time!”), Alison, Kate McCartney, AzzaMcKazza, DJ OG Costanza and Kell. Oh, and did I mention that we have an interview with Ian Haig, of !@#$% fame?

Sam Hoh

Just a few more weeks till we release BK#4! And in it we were lucky enough to get Sam Hoh to bust some illustrations for us again. Here’s a picture she did for a Natas Kaupas interview we had planned but never materialised. It was too good to waste so we figure we’ll put it up here. They’re some tight lines!!! Check out her site here: www.deepfriedsam.com.

And here are the two pieces she did for our last issue. The first is a portrait for our Daniel Johnston interview, the second is my bedroom when I’m stoned.

Michael Deforge’s ‘Lose’ #1 & #2

Posted in Uncategorized by brynzo on April 13, 2010

I just received the first two issues of Michael Deforge’s comic ‘Lose’ in the mail.  It’s amazing!  Dude has his style down pat, his drawings and layouts are really fresh.  Definitely one of the best things I’ve read through this year (Al Columbia’s ‘Pim & Francie’ was also rad)!

You can order copies from his site.

Deforge's cover art work is so sick

I had a hunch Batman was a jerk

Check out Michael Deforge’s site and blog.
